Works good if you follow directions and review various suggestions on here first

This could be hard or easy depending on knowledge and prep work. I followed the advice of the reviewer called Stefani who has the 4 part photos of install advice including how best to wrangle the wires by cutting them to half inch and then folding them over once to be quarter inch, see his photos. Also read the instructions that come with the dimmer. Remember there are 8 total screws to tighten, 4 for the wires and 4 for the housing, sometimes the unit opens such that the 4 screws for the wires are under the circuit board and you won't see them, in which case you need to take out the circuit board and flip it. You gotsta tighten the screws for the wires once they are in or the wires will easily fall out. You'll need a very small screwdriver of either flat or phillips head, I used one from an eyeglass repair kit. You'll need to identify which wire is the hot or neutral and install them in the correct place, those that do not know how to do this stuff should watch some lamp wiring videos and tutorials to learn the dos and don'ts, there's stuff you need to not do. Also one end of the dimmer circuit board says 'load' on it this end goes towards the lamp, the other end goes towards the plug. I used this on lamps that only take one bulb, this dimmer is not designed to take a heavy load with lots of bulbs. I suspect a lot of bad reviews on here are from people who did an incorrect installation and made various mistakes like overloading the dimmer beyond its rating. Also the directions included assume you already have basic wiring knowledge, they leave out a lot of things a newbie would want to know. I also suggest once you got it wired and working, glue the ends of the wires to the edge of the housing to work as a strain relief, like reviewer Stefani shows.

READ THIS

First: The instructions which came with my unit were WRONG, the line and load ends were reversed in the diagram. Follow the instructions for line and load marked on the circuit board, they are correct.Second: The unit REQUIRES a polarized plug AND a correctly polarized socket. There are plenty of old lamps with non-polarized plugs, same size prongs. A polarized plug has a large prong and a small prong. The large prong is the ribbed side of the cord and Neutral (N). The small prong is the smooth side and is line (L) this is the hot side.If you have a pre- 1960s house the sockets may not be polarized. In a post 60s house your sockets should have a three-prong, polarized connection. However, it is common to find the polarity reversed, check this! With the connections incorrect or the polarity reversed the unit will not work and may be destroyed.Things nice to know:The dual turns the large variable resistor. Next to it is a small white circular variable resistor, this can be adjusted with a screwdriver to set 100%. 100% should occur at the full dial setting. Mine were set correctly.Apply solder to the ends of the wires, before tightening them in the screw connections. This will harden them and make a more solid connection. Doubling the wires back will work but is less satisfactory. There is no strain relief and no room for a knot on the wires. After testing, apply hot glue, epoxy, or other adhesive to the wires inside the case for durability.I give the units 5 stars; they work and are a good value.I give the instructions no stars. There is plenty of room on the instruction sheet for everything written here as well as a correct diagram.

Work well when used as intended

I installed these 2 dimmers on a pair of bedside lamps that use one 40w incandescent ea. They work great - no buzzing or anything (& I have extremely sensitive hearing for that kind of electronic noise - can't sleep if there's a non-LED TV in the room!). They do only go down to approx 20% dim before clicking off, but I also have the adjustment screw in the casing all the way up given that full bright is only 40w on these anyway, and I would guess that a larger wattage would allow the adjustment to be able to dim further. The instructions included were, as others noted, not worth much, and that's saying something since I can usually figure out even the worst furniture ones! Lol. I just followed the instructions left in picture reviews with text on them that someone else very helpfully gave all of us! Whoever you are, you're awesome! One star off for the quality of the included screws (would have only been 1/2 off if that were an option).Because they're made of a softer metal (AL?) & the hole in the housing is not pre-threaded, all but one stripped out on the 1st unit before I could get it tightened. It's a minor detail, because better screws are a few cents ea at the local hardware store, but I would have been far more irritated than I was if I didn't have some already in my home kit of random leftovers from past projects & had to wait til morning and leave the house just over that.

Stable with no flicker

Easy to install and the narrow, thin, inline shape is unobtrusive. I'm using them on floor lamps with decorative LED bulbs and they're working great; no flicker and they hold their setting.

Cheap garbage - safety concerns

After realizing that Home Depot no longer stocks these replacement inline lamp dimmers, and at their suggestion, I found these on Amazon and they seemed like the reviews were positive. Mine is not & Im concerned that these might be a fire hazard. After receiving the dimmer, as someone who’s installed quite a few of them, I was surprised that the parts didn’t line up, the materials were too soft to take the screws and one of the cheap screws broke off in the casing. With all that, once the dimmer was connected, the lamp turned on and worked for the first 3 times but immediately started to flicker and then would not go to full brightness. This is potentially dangerous and I attempted to contact Amazon immediately, only to find that support online isn’t available, nor is the agent chat.At this point, I can’t seem to get a refund or even a return and will search for a better quality inline dimmer as I live these very good quality lamps. Stay away from these switches.
