I have moderate arthritis in both hands and have to ask my spouse to open bottles and jars for me. I often think that, if I lived alone, this would be a huge problem! I like being independent, so when I saw this set, I ordered it. I have had the jar opener item before, and found it just so so. It fit some jars but not others. This one is GREAT! The difference is that this one is hinged! It will open wide enough to fit over any size jar and you can squeeze it closed to make a seal. That in itself is enough to recommend it. The bottle opener is a life saver. Plastic bottles are getting harder and harder to open. This tool fits down over the cap and has a lever for twisting. The cap comes off easily. At first I had a problem getting the cap out of the tool after it was off the bottle. Then it dawned on me that the best way to get it out was just to screw it back onto the bottle! Works great. This is a terrific set if you have similar problems to mine. Makes my life much easier.

It has a great design and is very durable. For the most part, it is very easy to use, but there are a few jars that it doesn't fit around well.

Part of the lower rating is my fault, as I didn't realize (or take the measurements into account) it only goes up to a certain size, much small than most of the jars I need to open. Otherwise, it seems to be pretty sturdy and has a good grip. The mat was more useful to me personally, though.
