Q: Did your set fail within a month?

Failed after 5 months but in fairness to seller they sent a replacement. That's customer service and you can't buy that! Buy with confidence. Some sellers on amazon don't even reply or provide false descriptions

As far as I can remember, they are just switched on or off manually. I have some lights that will come on for an eight hour period, at the same time, every day, which these ones don’t. It is the only downside to them.

Q: could you connect two strings together? I don't think one is quite long enough.

Well creatively you could if you had socket at either end then plug in, have the two ends meet on the same wall hook. I wouldn't recommend splicing two sets together, as I no electrician.
